When discussing Lash Extensions with potential lash clients, the most common thing I hear is, ‘I would love to have my lashes done, but I’ve had them done before and they ruin my lashes.’

It’s True, Lash Extensions can be very damaging if they are applied incorrectly.

This Ultimate Guide will tell you how to find the perfect Lash technician. Someone to give you the beautiful lashes you’ve been dreaming of, without risking the health of your precious natural lashes.

How Can Lash Extensions Be Damaging?

Here are a few reasons:

  1. Stickies!

Eyelash extensions should always be applied Individually using the ‘isolation’ technique. This describes the process of isolating a single natural lash with tweezers and then applying a single extension (a single fan in the case of Russian lashes) to the isolated natural lash.

Using this technique will allow the natural eyelash to move and grow freely, as it’s supposed to. If a lash technician does not isolate the lashes from one another properly, lashes will stick other neighbouring lashes. They will start to pull on each other and inhibit each other’s growth. This can lead to severe discomfort and eventually the loss of a lot of natural lashes.

2. The Lash Extensions are too heavy.

There is a maximum weight that your natural lashes can handle when it comes to extensions. If the extensions are too long or too heavy, they will damage your natural lashes.

A good lash tech will tailor your lash set according to the strength of your natural lashes. Super long and thick lashes might be what you’re after but, they may not be suitable for you.

3. You’re not following the aftercare advice.

Whilst it’s mainly the responsibility of the technician to prioritize your lash health, you also have a responsibility to follow the aftercare they give you.

The most common myth is that you shouldn’t get them wet. This most definitely is NOT the case! Once the glue is fully dry (normally after 24/48 hours), you should clean your lashes regularly to avoid the build-up of dead skin, makeup residue, oils and dirt along the lash line. You wouldn’t leave weeks and weeks between hair washes. Don’t risk eye infections or lash loss. Keep those lashes clean! Just make sure you’re using an oil-free, lash friendly cleanser recommended by your technician.

You must also avoid using mascara and products containing oils. Oils will start to break down the glue, resulting in the shedding of the extensions.

Please note that aftercare advice may differ slightly depending on the products used by the technician.

Finding a Lash Artist who won’t damage your lashes – what to look for.

It’s best to find someone whose work you can see first. Check to see if they have a social media account or google listing that shows photos of their work. You’re looking for lashes that are evenly applied, with a light and fluffy appearance. Avoid the lashes that look super long, thick and clumped together.

Make sure they do a patch test! A reliable, well-trained technician will always ask first-time clients to come for a patch test before treatment. This will test for allergies to the glue they are using and ensure that you don’t have a reaction when it comes to having your full set applied.

Look at reviews and recommendations. They’re not always a completely accurate representation of the technician, but they can be a good indicator of who to go for. Alternatively, perhaps get in touch with an existing client of theirs to see if they would highly recommend their services.

Lastly, and most importantly, don’t be put off by a technician whose prices are at the higher end of the scale. You get what you pay for. It’s likely that a technician charging a little more has invested a lot of money in great training and products for their clients and that it will show in their work. You can expect to pay anywhere from £50 – £80 for a good set of Russian Volume Lashes depending on the location, experience & training of the technician.
