2020 has been a struggle for a lot of people. With all the stress about Corona and the new laws on mask-wearing in public, it’s not surprising that most people are having problems with their skin.

One of the most common problems is ‘Maskne’ (Face Mask Acne). This describes a breakout caused by wearing a face mask, which only occurs in the areas where the face mask sits (Chin, Nose, Mouth & Cheeks).

What causes ‘Maskne’?

Many factors can cause maskne: not keeping your face clean enough, wearing a dirty mask, and friction or humidity caused by wearing your mask.

Here are my top, (tried & tested) tips to get you and your skin through the pandemic:

  1. Clean your skin regularly

Certain bacteria are known to cause acne, so it’s really important to wash your face day & night (and after having your mask on)! Each face-washing session should consist of the removal of any makeup, followed by a double cleanse with your everyday face wash. This is the one I use and love!

2. Always wear a clean face mask

Wash your facemask in a very gentle detergent. The key is to avoid any potential irritation as this can lead to acne!

3.  Moisturize!

Dry skin can lead to clogged pores and eventually acne. Keep your skin healthy and quenched with your favourite moisturiser as part of your daily skincare routine. Just make sure it’s a gentle one!

4.  Avoid touching your face

Despite your hands being cleaner than ever right now, It’s best to avoid touching your face and transferring dirt and bacteria to your pores.

5.  Be gentle!

Most people tend to reach for the harsh, heavily scented products. This is the last thing your skin needs! Try to keep your daily skincare routine as gentle as possible using products that are alcohol and perfume free.

6.  Book in for a facial.

Aside from being a great little Self-care treat, a Dermaplaning facial will remove any dead skin and ‘peach fuzz’ and reduce the risk of clogged pores. It will also leave you with a beautifully glowy complexion.

7.  Go Makeup-Free

I know it can be hard, but is anyone in Sainsbury’s really going to see your face underneath that mask? Besides, you’re just as beautiful without it! Going makeup-free (at least in the masked area) will reduce the risk of clogged pores. Plus, there’s always Lash Extensions 😉

8.  Seek professional advice

I’m always so surprised at how uncommon it is for people to visit their Doctor about acne. There’s actually a lot they can do to help you!

9.  Use a face mask bracket.

These clever little things will keep your mask slightly away from your face. This will reduce the heat and friction and therefore reduce the risk of acne. It’s really a thing! Google it!

10.  Manage your expectations

STOP your endless scrolling through the perfectly photoshopped and carefully angled accounts. No one has perfect skin 100% of the time. Don’t let that one stubborn spot get you down!
